About Avsa - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Avşa Island, also known as Türkeli, is a Turkish island located in the southern Sea of Marmara, part of the Marmara District of Balıkesir Province. The island has an area of approximately 20.6 km² and is only a few hours from Istanbul or Tekirdağ by ferry or hydrofoil. The local population is approximately 2,000, but during the summer season this increases significantly, reaching between 40,000 and 100,000 visitors, due to its popularity among tourists from Turkey. The island is built on a mostly flat terrain, with wide beaches and clear waters, making it ideal for relaxation, water sports and recreation. Avşa Island benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and mild winters, making visits pleasant all year round.
The island has a rich history: during the Byzantine period, Avşa was known as Aphousia and was used as a place of exile, and later the Greek population left the island following the population exchange of 1923. The island is also famous for its traditional wine and olive oil production, which can be visited and tasted by tourists. Among the most popular beaches are Yiğitler Beach, with clean sand and safe waters, with cafes and restaurants nearby, Altınkum Beach, with golden sand, shallow waters and family facilities, including an amusement park, and Çınar Bay, smaller but with clean waters, a wide beach and picnic areas. The beaches are free, and sun loungers and umbrellas are rented from the municipality or from private facilities in the area. Visitors can rent boats or join sea excursions to explore the surroundings and nearby islands in the Sea of Marmara.
