About Aydin - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Aydın is a major city in the Aegean region of Turkey and the capital of the province of the same name, located in the fertile valley of the Büyük Menderes River (ancient Meander). Due to its strategic position, between the hilly areas and the coast, the city has been a prosperous agricultural center since ancient times, known especially for the production of figs, but also for olive oil and cotton. Today, in addition to agriculture, Aydın also has a light industry and a developing economy, increasingly based on services.
The city has a rich history, having been known in antiquity as Tralles, one of the most important urban centers in the Aegean region. Over time, it was under the rule of the Lydians, Persians, Greeks and Romans, later passing through the Byzantine period and then under Turkish and Ottoman domination. It has been influenced by important historical figures, such as Alexander the Great, and has suffered significant damage from earthquakes and conflicts. During the Ottoman period, the city, then known as Güzelhisar ("beautiful castle"), became an important administrative and commercial center.
In the modern era, Aydın has developed due to its position in the transportation network, being quickly connected to large cities such as İzmir and international airports. The region also played an important role in the development of railways in Turkey in the 19th century. Today, the city maintains a balance between tradition and modernity, with a relatively small but lively center, with markets, shops and cafes, and a quieter atmosphere compared to large tourist cities.
The Mediterranean climate, with very hot summers and mild winters, makes Aydın a suitable destination for visiting for most of the year, although temperatures during the summer can become high. In addition, the proximity to popular tourist resorts and important historical sites contributes to the attractiveness of the city.
