About Batman - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Batman is a city in southeastern Turkey and the capital of the province of the same name, located on a plateau at an altitude of approximately 540 m (1,700 ft), near the confluence of the Batman River and the Tigris. The city has a large, predominantly Kurdish population, and is part of the region known as Turkish Kurdistan.
Although it is now a major urban center, Batman was only a small village until the 1950s. Rapid development began after the discovery of oil deposits in the 1940s, especially the Batı Raman oil field, the largest in the country. In 1957, the city received city status and its current name, and later became the provincial capital (1990). The oil industry has driven economic growth, infrastructure expansion, and population growth.
In addition to oil, the local economy includes the production of processed foods, beverages, chemicals, furniture, and industrial equipment. The city is connected by oil pipelines and transportation networks to other major regions and has Batman Airport.
Historically, the area was inhabited by diverse communities, including Syriac Christians and Armenians, before the dramatic events of the Armenian Genocide. In modern times, the city has been marked by political and social tensions, as well as cultural initiatives, such as the organization of the first Kurdish film festival in Turkey in 2010.
Batman has a growing educational and cultural potential, hosting Batman University, founded in 2007. Football is the main sport, with the local team Batman Petrolspor being closely linked to the city's industrial identity.
