About Goreme - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
The former names of the city were Korama, Matiana, Maccan or Machan and Avcilar. When the nearby Göreme Valley was designated an important tourist destination, "center" for all the tourism in Cappadocia, the name of the city was changed to Göreme for practical reasons. Göreme's historically important sites include the churches Bezirhane, Durmus Kadir, Ortahane and Yusuf Koc, in addition to the richly decorated Tokali Kilise, the Apple Church and a number of houses and pigeons carved into the city's rock formations.
It is not known when Göreme was first settled, but it is known that there was a settlement there during the Hittite period, between 1800 and 1200 BC. For many centuries, the location was central between rival empires such as Hurri-Mitanni, Hittite Empire, Middle Assyrian Empire, Neo-Assyrian Empire, Persian Achaemenid Empire and Greek Seleucid Empire, leading the natives to tunnel into the rock for to get rid of political unrest. In the Roman period, the area became the home of Christians who withdraw from Rome. Christianity has predominated as the primary religion in the region, which is evident in many rock churches that can be seen today.
Göreme is the favorite tourist base for many travelers in Cappadocia due to its excellent selection of hotels, inns and guesthouses, as well as the Göreme Outdoor Museum.
