Izmit Bay is a long narrow bay and the vast basin of the Marmara Sea crash. It penetrates deep into the land of Anatolia. Izmit takes extreme eastern part of the bay of the same name. The positioning of the radiation area of the metropolis Istanbul and open sea have provided optimal conditions for industrial development from the first part of the 20th century. Unfortunately the city has grown right on seismic fault path North Anatolian fault along which tectonic plates constantly working, making the crust extremely unsafe and dangerous. It is the same fault that makes the most uncertain seismic Istanbul metropolis in the world which trickles to the west by the Aegean basin.
Even before the Izmit earthquake disaster last not present urban and tourist interest, as a typical industrial city with architecture unincorporated crowded and with little material evidence of the past. The only valuable monument is the mosque Pertev Pasha example of classical Ottoman architecture, creation of sec. 16th aenumitului architect Sinan (Mimar Sinan). We can see the ruins of the ancient Acropolis, less interesting, dating back to Roman times and a clock tower in sec. 19th-century example of architecture Europeanised. Rise of such towers was a real fashion clock for Turkish cities sec. 19th.
