About MUDANYA - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Mudanya is a port city and district located in Bursa Province, on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara, in the Gemlik Gulf. With a population of over 100,000, the town combines the charm of a quiet coastal town with a rich history and an important strategic position. Over time, Mudanya was also known as the site of the ancient settlement of Apamea Myrlea, which gives it a valuable historical heritage.
The city developed as an important port center, having been connected to Bursa in the past by a railway line built in the 19th century, facilitating transportation and trade. Mudanya was a key point for exports, especially for silk and other local products, many of which were sent to Istanbul. Today, the port is mainly used by fishing boats and small ships, and the local economy is largely supported by olive oil production and maritime activities.
Historically, Mudanya has witnessed important events, including during the Turkish War of Independence, when the city suffered damage from bombing in 1920. Later, in 1922, the Armistice of Mudanya was signed here, a pivotal moment that contributed to the end of the actual conflict and the established politics in the region. After the Treaty of Lausanne, the population exchange between Greece and Turkey brought significant changes to the demographic structure of the city.
Today, Mudanya is appreciated for its relaxed atmosphere, coastal landscapes and combination of tradition and modernity. Its proximity to Bursa and access to the sea make it an attractive destination for both tourists and those looking for a quiet getaway on the Sea of Marmara coast.
