About Tekirdag - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Tekirdağ area is the site of many holiday homes, because the city is only two hours drive from Istanbul. Şarköy villages, Mürefte and Kumbağ are particularly popular with Turkish tourists. A big part of this holiday was built in an unregulated and unplanned and therefore much of the coast looks over-built. Marmara Sea is polluted, but there are still a number of beaches near Tekirdağ.
Most of the city's Ottoman wooden buildings were replaced with concrete blocks of flats, but some are restored or replaced with attractive houses in traditional style. Except Rüstem Paşa Camii, built by Ottoman architect, Mimar Sinan in the 16th century and narrow streets that help a picture of life in the Ottoman period, the city has antique charm. One reason to visit are delicasetele local small spicy cylindrical grilled meatballs called Tekirdağ köftesi followed traditional cheese and sweet semolina pudding.
