Trabzon (Greek: Τραπεζοῦς Trapezûs, Τραπεζούντα Trebizond, "Tramtara" (Laz), or "Trabzani") is a city in northeastern Turkey, located on the Black Sea coast.
Trabzon is the provincial capital. In the past it was known as Trebizond.
Trabzon is one of Turkey's major cities, being also the largest city in the eastern Black Sea region. It has a population of 757 353 people, distributed over an area of almost 4700 kilometers square.
Due to the rainy climate even in summer, the landscape is dominated by green forests and mountains rich in rivers and vegetation.

One of the most beautiful vestiges of times long gone is the monastery of Sumela, built in the fourth century, in a beautiful natural setting, on a promontory of a valley in Macka, just 50 km from Trabzon to over 1,200 meters above sea level.
Tradition says that the monastery was built in 386 by two Greek monks, Sophrony and Barnabas after they found an icon of the Virgin Mary in one of the mountain caves, which led them to settle there.
Ataturk Mansion, built in the nineteenth century by a wealthy banker, Konstantinos Kappagianidis is a typical example of European architecture of that era.
During his two visits in Trabzon, in 1930 or in 1947, Ataturk arrived at the mansion, and later, in 1964, the municipality to buy the house and turn it into a memorial museum.
